OneWorld PERSPECTIVES Magazine: Learning the Future

OneWorld’s PERSPECTIVES Magazine examines the status of education worldwide, analyzing the challenges while highlighting some of the most promising and innovative initiatives.

United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI)
Launched at the 2000 World Education Forum in Dakar, UNGEI is a partnership working globally to narrow the gender gap in education. Its Web site includes links to its recent publications.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
UNESCO’s Web site includes information about its educational initiatives as well as the six Education for All goals.

UNICEF Education Publications
A listing of all recent UNICEF reports and publications regarding global education issues.

Education for All Fast Track Initiative (FTI)
A global partnership between donor and developing countries created by the World Bank, FTI works to coordinate the dispersement of educational aid money.

Global Campaign for Education
The Global Campaign for Education promotes education as a basic human right, and mobilizes public pressure on governments and the international community to provide free, compulsory public basic education for all people.

Center for Global Development (CGD)
CGD is an independent, non-profit think tank working to reduce global poverty and inequality. In cooperatin with the World Bank, CGD released the paper “A Millennium Learning Goal: Measuring Real Progress in Education” in August 2006.

Pratham
Pratham is an educational NGO based in Mumbai, India.

Educational Resource Unit — India
The Educational Resource Unit of India, a consulting group, has numerous papers from its research studies and evaluations available for download on its site.

Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE)
An NGO based in Nairobi, Kenya, FAWE seeks to ensure that girls have access to school, complete their studies, and perform well at all levels.

American Academy of Arts and Sciences: Project on Universal Basic and Secondary Education (UBASE)
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is an independent policy research center. UBASE, a special project to study universal education, is headed by David Bloom and Joel Cohen. Below are links to three papers written or co-written by Bloom and Cohen for the project.

Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA)
The ADEA was established in 1988 at the initiative of the World Bank; it works to develop partnerships between Ministers of Education and funding agencies in order to promote effective education policies.

“Letting Them Fail: Government Neglect and the Right to Education for Children Affected by AIDS”
A publication by Human Rights Watch which examines the impact of educational policies in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa on children orphaned or otherwise affected by HIV/AIDS.

“Last in Line, Last in School, How donors are failing children in conflict-affected fragile states.”
A report by Save the Children examining how children in areas of war and conflict get little help for education.

I just saw this program the other night for the first time. It makes me wonder why the Hague does not consider the denial of education for girls in Afghanistan “crime against humanity”.
