ALI: According to historians this university was counting 25,000 students.

GATES: 25,000 students?

ALI: Yeah.

GATES: Huh. What did they study?

ALI: Well, they study … things like astronomy and … Islamic sciences, the Koran, the mathematics …

GATES: Medicine?

ALI: Medicine, yeah, medicine.

GATES: So they would studying in these rooms?

ALI: They used, they were studying in these rooms in the morning …

GATES: Hm-mm …

ALI: … and in the afternoon courses are given in the court.

GATES: In the court. How long did it take to get through the upper level?

ALI: It's about 10 years.

GATES: So that's like getting a BA, Bachelor's degree and then PhD …

ALI: Yeah.

GATES: … today.

ALI: And once you get graduated you get your diploma and you also get the traditional turban.

GATES: A turban?

ALI: Yeah.

GATES: Now would the scholars come from all over Black Africa or mostly from Mali?

ALI: They came from Black Africa, from West Africa and most of them were taken in charge by the local population and with additional chiefs.
