Abu Simbel
The Abu Simbel temples were carved out of a mountain on the banks of the Nile between 1290 and 1224 B.C. Aswan High Dam construction in the mid-1960s threatened to flood the temples, so an international team cut the entire mountain into blocks, then reconstructed them on higher ground. It took more than four years and cost $40 million!

The Nubian people living there had to leave their ancestral lands, but before it was flooded many caring people worked to save and preserve their unique culture and language.
