The most noble and elemental of all tools. The axe is an impact chopping tool with the blade in the same plane as the length of the handle. Even Thoreau, friend of trees and water, succumbed to the romance of the axe. In 1850s Canada, wrote Ernest Thompson Seton, the phrase "He's a good man" meant that someone was "unusually dexterous with the axe."
