Gauge, Cutting

Gauge, Cutting

On a cutting gauge, a knife blade substitutes for the scratching point used on a common gauge. With a good cutting gauge, you can precut shoulders across the grain of wood, as when making a panel, or even cut a shallow rabbet into a piece. Start with shallow cuts and take care that the blade does not tend to track into the grain and move with it rather than precisely parallel to the edge.
