This is the common name for a hand axe or bench axe. The great divide in such tools is whether the blade is beveled on one or two sides. A camp hatchet is beveled on two sides and well suited to chopping smaller pieces into shorter lengths. A broad hatchet is beveled only on the side facing away from the wood surface as you chop down with the flat side along the grain. By scoring and slicing you can quickly shape a piece of wood right down to the line.
