Gouge, Turning

Gouge, Turning

Because it is never struck, the tang of a turning gouge has no shoulder where it sticks into the end of the wooden handle. Ground to a rounded nose, the turning gouge rides on the outside bevel, with the edge taking a shearing cut from the cross-grained wood.
