Bruce D. Hertzke
Chairman, president, CEO
Winnebago Industries
Bruce D. Hertzke

Hertzke rose gradually through the Winnebago ranks, starting in 1971 when he was hired as a production worker. By 1988, he was the company's supervisor of RV design, and by June 1995, he was chief operating officer. He has been chairman and CEO since April 1998.

After trading in a range between $10 and $20 for most of the first two and a half years of Hertzke's tenure, Winnebago's stock price has gained more than 250 percent since hitting the bottom in November 2000. The stock has been especially strong since last year's terrorist attacks -- it seemed to be topping out around $30 per share before Sept. 11, but after an initial post-attack plunge along with the rest of the stock market, Winnebago shot up close to $50 earlier this year.

Wall Street is drawn to the growth of Winnebago and the mobile home and RV industry in general, possibly due to travelers choosing to go on the ground rather than fly because of terrorist-spurred fears. Winnebago's revenue for the latest reported quarter increased more than 26 percent year-over-year, and earnings per share have risen at almost twice that rate. Back orders doubled for the company's March quarter and rose 125 percent in the June quarter, Hertzke recently told The Wall Street Journal. And with Baby Boomers getting older, many analysts believe things will only get better for Winnebago and its peers.

Things now look so strong for Winnebago that the company plans to open a new plant next year in Iowa to increase motor home production capacity by 30 percent.

Hertzke graduated with an associate degree from Iowa Lakes Community College in 1971.
