Over the past two decades, Jean-Marie Eveillard has established himself as one of the top global fund managers. He has managed the former SoGen International Fund for over two decades and the SoGen Overseas and Gold Funds since their inception in 1993, as well as the First Eagle U.S. Value Fund since its inception. All three funds have incorporated First Eagle in their names to reflect the affiliation with Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder, Inc. The SoGen International Fund was renamed the First Eagle SoGen Global Fund, to better describe the fund's worldwide investment strategy.
Eveillard and co-manager Charles de Vaulx shared Morningstar's International Stock Manager of the Year award. "Few managers are as focused on capital preservation as these two," Morningstar said in January, following a stellar two years that saw Class A shares of First Eagle SoGen Global rise 9.7 percent and 10.45 percent in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Through July 8, SoGen Global A in 2002 has a posted a year-to-date return of 10.2 percent, fourth best in Morningstar's "International Hybrid" category.
The SoGen Overseas Fund has done even better, with Class A shares gaining 20.8 percent and 27.2 percent in 2000 and 2001, and 14.4 percent so far this year. Over the past two years, SoGen Overseas has been one of the top two peformers in Morningstar's "International Stock" field.
