Cooke & Bieler |

Bear markets have been good for Norris.
The Cooke & Bieler Mid-Cap Value Fund co-managed by Norris gained 41 percent in 2000 and 25 percent in 2001, outpacing not only the S&P 500 but also mid-cap benchmarks such as the Russell Mid-Cap Value Index and the S&P Mid-Cap 400/Barra Value Index. So far this year, Norris' fund is down 5.8 percent, while benchmark indices have seen double-digit percentage losses.

Skeptics might point out that C&B Mid-Cap Value did poorly during the late '90s as the bull market climaxed. But that kind of market growth is an extreme anomaly. "I don't anticipate that will ever be repeated again to that magnitude," Norris told the Financial Times earlier this year.
At the end of the second quarter, the C&B Mid-Cap's largest holdings included clothing maker Tommy Hilfiger and office furniture manufacturer Steelcase.
Norris graduated from Guilford College with earned a degree in management. He recieved an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following graduate school, he spent almost 10 years with Sterling Capital Management before joining Cooke & Bieler in 1998.
