Train

Multi-platinum selling band Train formed in 1994, through a chance meeting and plenty of hard work. Though they are based in San Francisco, the band’s genesis began further south in Los Angeles.

Singer Patrick Monahan left Erie, Pennsylvania for Los Angeles in 1993. While there he met a band called The Apostles, who were in the midst of disbanding. Lead singer/guitarist Rob Hotchkiss asked Monahan to form a duo, and the pair traversed coffeehouses and venues, playing numerous shows. Eventually they added former Apostles’ guitarist Jim Stafford, bassist Charlie Colin and drummer Scott Underwood and Train was born.

The group released its eponymous debut on Aware Records in 1998. The album was a college favorite and spawned the hits “Meet Virginia” and “Free.” The group toured relentlessly, and then took a break to work on its sophomore album. In 2001 Drops Of Jupiter was released. The title track became a huge hit, and garnered Train a Grammy for Best Arrangement. Its hit “She’s On Fire” also appeared on DOJ.

Third album My Private Nation dropped in 2003. The album’s anthemic “Calling All Angels” flew up the charts to number one, and earned a Grammy nomination. In 2004 the band released its first live album, Alive At Last.

In 2006 Train released For Me It’s You. The group’s lineup was also expanded. It added former Black Crowes bassist Johnny Colt, and Atlanta keyboardist Brandon Bush (John Mayer, Shawn Mullins). For Me It’s You features the single “Cab.”
