The news of the bloodshed rockets along the eastern seaboard, and thousands of volunteers, called &#8220;Minute Men,&#8221; converge on Cambridge, Massachusetts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>June 11, 1776<\/strong><\/span><br>The Colonies&#8217; Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and formed a committee whose express purpose was drafting a document that would formally sever their ties with Great Britain.&nbsp;<br>The committee included Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston.&nbsp;<br>Jefferson, who was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer, crafted the original draft document.<br>A total of 86 changes were made to his draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">J<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>uly 4, 1776<\/strong><\/span><br>Jefferson\u2019s final version of the document officially becomes The Declaration of Independence and is adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Following a decade of agitation over taxes and a year of war, representatives make the break with Britain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<div  class=\" wp-block-pbs-blocks-row no-image\">\n\n            \n    <div class=\"wp-block-pbs-blocks-col no-image has-blue-background-color\" style=\"background-color:#1c2838;\">\n        <div class=\"content\">\n\n                            \n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-pbs-blocks-content has-pdt-15 has-pdb-15\">\n    <div class=\"content\">\n                \n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/a-capitol-fourth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/uc004215.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4013\" width=\"264\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/a-capitol-fourth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/uc004215.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/a-capitol-fourth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/uc004215-173x300.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><figcaption><em><em><span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">Photo of the \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/treasures\/images\/uc004215.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">original rough draught<\/a>\u201d of the Declaration of Independence courtesy of the Library of Congress.<\/span><\/em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"wp-block-pbs-blocks-col no-image has-blue-background-color\" style=\"background-color:#1c2838;\">\n        <div class=\"content\">\n\n                            \n<div class=\"wp-block-pbs-blocks-content has-pdt-60 has-pdb-60 has-pdl-15 has-pdr-60\">\n    <div class=\"content\">\n                \n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">\u201cThat these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States.\u201d<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><em><span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">-Declaration of Independence<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">This affirmed that the 13 colonies would be free and independent states breaking all ties with Great Britain.<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">As independent states, they would be able to make trade agreements and treaties, wage war, and do whatever is necessary to govern themselves<\/span>.<\/h5>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<div  class=\" wp-block-pbs-blocks-row no-image\">\n\n            \n    <div class=\"wp-block-pbs-blocks-col no-image has-gold-background-color\" style=\"background-color:#d3c8a8;\">\n        <div class=\"content\">\n\n                            \n<div class=\"wp-block-pbs-blocks-content has-pdt-60 has-pdb-60 has-pdl-60 has-pdr-60\">\n    <div class=\"content\">\n                \n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>July 8, 1776<\/strong><\/span><br>The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia&#8217;s Independence Square to the ringing of bells and band music.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>January 18, 1777<\/strong><\/span><br>Congress authorizes the printing of the Declaration with the names of the signers (first time names of signers are printed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>July 4, 1777<\/strong><\/span><br>One year later, Philadelphia marked Independence Day by adjourning Congress and celebrating with bonfires, bells and fireworks.<br>The custom eventually spread to other towns, both large and small, where the day was marked with processions, oratory, picnics, contests, games, military displays and fireworks. Observations throughout the nation became even more common at the end of the War of 1812 with Great Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>September &#8211; October, 1781<\/strong><\/span><br>A joint French and American force traps a large British army on Virginia&#8217;s Yorktown peninsula. Unable to evacuate or receive reinforcements. General Cornwallis is forced to surrender. Although New York City and Charleston, S.C., will remain in British hands until a peace treaty is signed two years later, the war for American independence is essentially over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>September 3, 1783<\/strong><\/span><br>The Treaty of Paris ratifies the independence of the 13 North American states. Canada remains a British province, beginning its separate development as a U.S. neighbor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>June 1826<\/strong><\/span><br>Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C. to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote. All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man&#8230;<\/span> <span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.&#8221;<\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em><span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">&#8211; Thomas        \n<div class=\"wp-block-pbs-blocks-content has-pdt-60 has-pdb-60 has-pdl-60 has-pdr-60\">\n    <div class=\"content\">\n                \n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>1870<\/strong><\/span><br>Congress established Independence Day as a holiday<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>1938<\/strong><\/span><br>Congress reaffirmed it as a paid holiday for federal employees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Today<\/strong><\/span><br>Communities across the nation mark this major holiday with parades, firework displays, picnics and performances of &#8220;The Star-Spangled Banner&#8221; and marches by John Philip Sousa.<\/p>\n\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n
