FEATURED COLLECTION

“I’m helping my neighbors, and they’re helping me…”

Taking suggestion from American Portrait's social media followers, this feature collection is inspired by the phrase

American Portrait opened the suggestion box on social media and got a variety of requested topics. Using the recommended phrase “Love Thy Neighbor,” this collection celebrates all the ways Americans are stepping up, improving their neighborhoods and supporting their neighbors. What does being a good neighbor mean to you?

When I step outside my door I expect great things. I expect people to greet me with “Good morning!” or “Hello” but rarely get such. It hurts me that so many people are unfriendly and ignore each other. This is sad yet this idea of treating...

I never expected THIS IS PART TWO of "to be continued". ...Then there was a knock at the door. I threw on my pants, my ubiquitous mask and opened it. There was my neighbor from across the street carrying a heaping plate of Thanksgiving classics...

I never expected to be changed so much by knocking on doors for the Census. I was there to gather information for the government. However, I soon learned that many people were eager to connect and tell so much more. There were people struggling because...
