Zakiyah A.
Thomasina Topbear (City Mischief)

From thousands of submissions, 8 American Portrait stories were brought to life by muralists translating the words of everyday people to communities across America. In Minneapolis, we collaborated with artist Thomasina Topbear (City Mischief) to create a mural inspired by the story of Zakiyah A.

“I wanted to create a piece that represented the healing and joy in Zakiyah A's story. There are some Indigenous medicines represented such as the sunflowers, sweet grass & a medicine wheel for balance along with graffiti style straight lettering. Graffiti has been a healing tool and form of expression I have used as a coping skill to battle the effects of trauma of colonialism. For joy butterflies are featured representing rebirth and wildflowers for their playful beauty.”
