From thousands of submissions, 8 American Portrait stories were brought to life by muralists translating the words of everyday people to communities across America. In Washington D.C., we collaborated with artist Craig Redman and Karl Maier to create a mural inspired by the story of Lily N.

Based on Lily N’s moving quote, artists Craig Redman and Karl Maier, developed this bold typographical mural which, they say, “highlights two words that are more important now than ever before: you belong.”

Wrapped around two adjoining walls in Washington DC, the piece reflects upon the importance of connection, and the identity we can find in our shared surroundings. “We wanted to focus on a message of inclusivity, to reinforce the idea that even though you may feel different or alone in these difficult times, you aren't,” say Craig and Karl. “You are part of a greater community that wants and needs you.”
