My parent(s) wanted me to…
My parent(s) wanted me to L ive. It is a hot early morning in 1942 when my young Jewish German mother and a 3 year old me are standing at roll call in the French internment camp, when she leaves me behind with the stranger who would save my life, as she is deported to Auschwitz the death camp where she is gassed. Six months later while my young father is in hiding he makes contact with a 19 year-old Mademoiselle Rothschild, working with the French resistance, and begs her to smuggle me and my 2 older sisters into Switzerland, before he too is deported to Auschwitz and gassed on arrival. I am a grateful, joy filled, 81 year-old American, who know that life is a gift
