My parent(s) wanted me to…
My parent(s) wanted me to get an education, and lead a happy, good life. They never had the same opportunity coming to the States as refugees of the 1975 Khmer Rouge Genocide, killing both my grandfathers and several aunts/uncles on both sides of my family. The pain and suffering my family has endured is similar to the stories of many other refugees, but so is the life they were able to create here. It wasn't perfect, there were a lot of other hardships faced here as well, but it made my family resilient. Our success founded from the ashes of hardship is the most American thing, and that is the start of my American story.
