I was raised to believe that the definition of family was very closed and finite: one man, one woman, and as many children as physically possible. it was an evangelical home. I felt really uncomfortable with that bit of doctrine pretty early on but it was years before I realized the reason I couldn’t wrap my head around it was that I’m a woman who loves women. my partner Ash and I are now raising my daughter from a previous relationship and Ash’s adopted son from her prior marriage; with the help of Ash’s ex wife, Mary. ash and I helped deliver Mares’ little baby pearl, who is just as much a sibling to our other children as if they shared genetics. Our friends call us “the big gay Brady bunch” and I couldn’t be happier.
