Our family's response to the current moment was to form an anti-racism book group. Each week, family members across 6 states and 2 generations get together on Zoom to talk about how we have participated in and benefitted from the horrors of slavery and racism. Equally important, we focus on how much we all have lost as a result of the systematic oppression of massive numbers of people. There have been moments of acute discomfort. We have struggled to move from talking about big ideas to concretely and specifically identifying our own racist behaviors. But we have started to do that. And for sure, now is the time to work together across state lines and generations, and with loved ones, to educate ourselves about racism and our part in it, and to take action.
