My American story started when I lost my birth mother to a tragic event when I Wass 3 years old and my father placed in a convent to be raised by a guardian, Sr. Bernadette. Through my years in the
convent and with the love and naturing of Sr. Bernadette, I was raised to believe that in the right environment, and with the love and naturing of the right people, you can become all that you were created to be.
It is this belief that prompted me to start my non-profit organization when I retired in 2011. I called it "Bernadette's House," in memory of my guardian Sr. Bernadette who taught me that I could change my story because there were people in my life who loved and believed in me.
So many girls of color struggle w
