I never expected that learning who my real father was would open up the treasures it has regarding my ancestry. The richness of researching who my ancestors are has changed my life. When I heard Dr Henry Louis Gates describe the scenario that took place on Edisto Island, SC in one of your PBS specials during the Civil War, I was captivated. He told how my enslaved ancestors were allowed to remain on a plantation when the Union soldiers were setting fires to others. When the white citizens returned years later, they were forced to leave. The descendants from that island and the enslaved people from those plantations are many and still live close to the house that still stands. One world renowned descendant that hails from that great lineage is the great Motown Bass Player, my cousin James Lee Jamerson.
