I never expected…
I never expected to head coach the New Mexico AA High school f oot-
ball champions of 1976. At McCurdy School, a United Methodists program,
Not only did Spanish kids suit up for the game but some Native American well as Anglo and African American youth participated.
In 1973 the team had a 8 - 1 winning season, no opponent scored on the Bobcats the first six games. The one lost was against the team that took state that year.
In 1974 our record was 7-2
losing only to Taos (AAA school) to Jal in the playoffs.
Our top quarterback could not play in ‘75 due to a knee injury. Consequently that season’s record was 3-6.
With the starting quarterback back playing the following season, the team won 11, lost 1 and won the state AA football title. I was named coach of the year.
