I never expected to be so desperate for prison visits! Every incarcerated person, like my partner, is somebody’s child, brother, husband, father, mother. They are loved, they never stop being your family. They have made mistakes, done bad things in their past. But that doesn’t make them “throw-away” people. Their lives have meaning and value.
It’s amazing, all the families going to great lengths to visit loved ones in prison. Grandparents in wheelchairs, mothers with babies, children who joyfully run into their fathers’ arms. We drive for hours, wait on hard benches, drag kids through the metal detector. We crowd around tables sharing vending machine meals, playing games, reading, talking, doing all we can to squeeze out every bit family normalcy we can. With this pandemic, we don’t even get this anymore.
