My American story started when I was born. I was born deaf. I was born Mvskoke-Creek. I was born in the lower spectrum of the social class ladder. It's hard to get anyone to listen to your message when you're a poor, deaf Mvskoke man. I'm an artist who goes by the name Dead Feather. My work tackles the subject of assimilation and the result of the civilization process concerning the American Indian, in particular the Mvskoke-Creek. My American story is a personal story of a Mvskoke-Creek man who finds himself systematically cut off from his culture generation by generation only to overcome his personal obstacles by quitting drinking, self-educating, and piecing together his visual history so other assimilated Mvskoke-Creek who might not have access to their history might not repeat the continuous cycle of being lost.
