Family looks like a safe place, especially when you don't know where you belong in the world. I grew up in a family that made me feel like I was not enough. My thoughts and opinions were criticized, and my gifts were seen as flaws. I didn't have a voice for the first 27 years of my life. After cutting ties with my family, I built a new family with my husband and my friends. My husband saw me for who I am before I even had the courage to express myself, and I am thankful for the love, encouragement, and stability he gives me every day. My friends make me feel empowered to be myself, to use my voice, and to be kind and compassionate with myself. This family, my chosen family, lifts me up, and always helps me remember that I am enough and I am loved. I have a place I belong in the world because of them.
