My American dream is not just about material things. I have a house, gardens, work and family I love. For decades, my dream has been for gay and transgender people like me in rural America to be safe and have fair treatment under the law. Even as a former State Senator, this dream has been a struggle. Here in Idaho, as hate crimes and violence continue, as threats increase and my transgender friends are targeted by cruel legislation, we celebrate progress, but in the past year it feels we are going backward. It's frightening, especially for someone like me who's always looking for ways to give others hope as we work toward that dream.
