I took a risk when…
I took a risk when I was 55 years old and joined Peace Corps. I eventually passed all the tests and was assigned to Senegal, West Africa. My work would focus on small enterprise development at the grass roots level "in the bush." "In the bush?" I echoed."Yes, You'd live in a hut. Do you think you can live without electricity and running water? Without toilet paper?"I paused. "Well, I could probably live without the first two, but I'm not sure about the third item." Of course I accepted. A few months later I stood gazing out at the Atlantic Ocean from an African village on the beach, alone. Three years later I would know that beach and those villagers better than I had ever known my neighbors back home.
