I never expected I’d stop being a teacher. For 34 years my favorite part of filing taxes was filling in my occupation as a special education teacher. Now here was the start of the 2017 school year and I was home, crying, wondering who I was if not a teacher.
Five months earlier I found myself in an ambulance, heading to the local hospital where I was told I had cancer. I remember lying in the ER dictating lesson plans to e-mail into school. After hearing I was stage IV, I submitted my retirement papers then bought myself a Mustang convertible. At least I’d go out in style! I underwent a year of chemo, radiation, and surgery, then heard the magic words, I was in remission.
Since then I have taken up pottery, started making quilts and become a tutor. But in my heart, I’ll always be a teacher.
