To me, work means two things: The first is that it's hard enough for someone like me, as a professor of communication and media, to understand our contemporary media culture. And so, to expect young people to understand it is a tall order at best. Thus, the best we can do is to enter into a conversation, and to try to understand it all together. The second is that our media influence our collective political and civic and social and cultural life in profound ways. And there are folks who believe we are trying to indoctrinate young people toward some ideology - when all we really want is for them to develop a politic of their own, for it to be thoughtful and caring, and for them to inform themselves and their politic as best they possibly can.
