My American story started when…
My American story started when my mother, a high school graduate from Detroit met my father, a Nigerian immigrant escaping the Biafran War in Detroit. They enrolled in college, got married, and had me a year. My parents returned to Nigeria after college with the hopes of getting good jobs as the educated elite who studied abroad in post colonial Nigeria. Unfortunately, he had fought in the Civil War; suffered head injuries and developed schizophrenia. My mother met a different husband than she when she arrived in Nigeria. My father no longer took his medicine and when she could not cope with the hardships, she returned to America. She left me behind. I returned to America in 1996. I lived through some horrible situations growing up in Nigeria, but the only thing that kept me going was my hope of returning to America.
