My American story started when…
My American story started when my grandfather’s dad from Spain became the mayor of his hometown in the Philippines. Though my grandfather grew up an affluent young boy with gold rimmed glasses and servants, his mother died in the flu epidemic, and his father remarried. He studied art and came to the U.S. at 18 to further his studies and left with 2 suits and $50 assuring his Dad that he would find work. Though they would write often, he would never see his dad or brother alive again. After finding signs saying “No Filipinos Wanted” in Seattle, he found work as a migrant farm worker, met and married my grandmother (a hula dancer) in California. They would both become notable local artists with a 4 story house and art studio at one time included on a SF House tour
