To me, work means much more than employment. Work is productivity that benefits me or my family or my employer or my community. Parenting is work. Cooking is work. Doing team sports is work. Learning is work. My mantra is "Meaningful work, paid or unpaid, through the last breath."
At age 88, I'm hoping to have another decade for meaningful work! What I'll be doing is encouraging lifelong learning of the skills, habits, and attitudes that generate productivity. Good workers are those who show up on time with a smile and good basic skills, eager to learn and to do, and ready to cooperate with others to get the work done. We who are elders need to give the next generations a reason for hope. It's time to speak our truth, create community, and be the ones we needed when we were younger.
