I never expected to become an enthusiastic roller skater past age thirty. But during the pandemic, after spending months cooped up in my apartment, I was desperate to try something new. Before, my husband and I used to go dancing often--the experience of moving in a crowd of people was a source of such potent joy. And it turns out that roller skating flips a lot of those same mental switches! My roller skating community is incredibly welcoming and safe, and when I strap on those wheels and start gliding, to 60s funk, 80s disco, whatever strikes our fancy, I feel connected to my body's potential for bliss in such an incredibly powerful way. Finding a way to simply be with others, to gather and dance and celebrate being alive during this time of stress and separation has been a true and surprising gift.
