I never expected…
I never expected that in my lifetime I would live in an America where I could be my whole self, speak my whole voice, express my whole parts, without fear, without shame. No longer divided between old and new, East and West, parts and whole, I now finally feel like I am that most illusive of all things, an American. And of all the groups I thought would lead me to salvation, the all knowing West, the all powerful white, the academic, the scientist, the celebrity, I never thought that it would be a people even more marginalized than I that would lead the way. I never expected that it would be black Americans, in their ongoing resistance, their refusal to stand down, to be silenced, even with a knee to their neck, I never thought it would be the most voiceless among us, that would finally restore my voice.
