I never expected that I would become a travel writer because for nearly twenty-five years every travel story that I submitted to a newspaper Travel Editor was rejected. Every. Single. Story. But on Mother’s Day of 2009 the San Francisco Chronicle published my story about glaciers in Southeast Alaska in its Sunday Travel Section. Three months later, the Dallas Morning News ran another one of my stories about “Southeast” (as the locals call it). And six months later my story about traveling to Sitka, Alaska and its world-famous summer music festival appeared in the Los Angeles Times. Never believe that you cannot do that which you have never expected that you could do. Just believe in yourself and persevere, even if the odds of succeeding seem to be overwhelming against you.
