The list of things that "I never expected" is substantial. Most immediately, I never expected universities to halt in-person courses and move to online instruction. None of us - professors such as myself, or students - are prepared for this. Of course, there is no reason we should be - because we never expected it. Aside from the complexity and uncertainty of fundamentally shifting course delivery mid-semester, we also face the loss of interacting with students/colleagues with whom we have developed relationships over the past months. This adds an extra element of loss to the uncertainty ahead of all of us, as the virus undoubtedly spreads across the country.
