My American story started when my mother, Amelia, met my father, Jose, in the Philippines. When my brothers and I were just kids, in the Philippines, we moved to the United States in 1970. Soon after my younger twin sisters were born in the States. We jokingly say that they’re the only ones in our family that could run for president.
We were taught that we were born Filipinos but we were raised Americans. We had an obligation to give back to the country that took care of us and raised us. My mother got her Master’s degree in Social Work and became a therapist, now retired. My 2 older brothers and I became 1st generation law enforcement officers. We all grew up to become a very intricate part of the American tapestry.
