My parent(s) wanted me to…
As children of the 1950s and the Black middle class, my parent(s) wanted to me to have a perfectly normal life: college, marriage and 2.5 children, the house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. I think the life they envisioned for me is very different that the one I wound up with. Even though I was exposed to arts growing up, there wasn't anyone like me, and I had a hard time coloring in the lines. I wanted to create and write, so I had to break the mold and make my own story.
