My American story started when I stood at Rouses Point, New York with one foot in Canada and the other in the USA.
After two weeks crisscrossing the Atlantic our little ship made its
first landfall in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Our convoy had been
rerouted to Canada because of the U-boat activity outside of New York
harbor. From Halifax the ship took us North
around the Gaspe peninsula into the St. Lawrence river. We landed in Montreal and the American refugee
organization HIAS threw a big reception party for us that evening. That night we boarded a bus that would take us across Rouses
Point, New York into America, and through Albany down to New York City.May, 2020 © All rights reserved Peter Adler, Fort Lee, NJ, USA
