I took a risk when I walked into an emotionally-charged crowd of demonstrators and decided to tell the truth. The truth has never been a problem for me, but the courage to tell it when nobody asked - that's where it really comes down to guts. Anybody can stand in a high place and photograph a crowd with a zoom lens, but on this day, I decided the truth was among the sweat and the chanting voices, the tear gas and the pepper bullets. It seems like a big-picture issue, but among those black lives, the story became very personal, and I found my photographs reflecting that personal story, the anger, the fear, the frustration of a life where you matter less than the comfort and convenience of a person of a different hue.
