Reconnaissance photograph of Auschwitz II (Birkenau) taken by a reconnaissance squadron of the South African Air Force on May 31, 1944.

This mission, like many others, was aimed at locating the IG Farben factory and other war production facilities. Information revealed by this image was used by American forces, who eventually bombed the factory, destroying it.
