For
five months in 1998, a Body & Soul
team got to know cancer patient Lenny Zakim for this documentary-style
report on his search for a better quality of life through complementary
therapies. We watch as Lenny visits his acupuncturist, massage therapist,
nutritionist, imagist, and goes to healing services at his synagogue.
Interviews explore why Lenny chose to add complementary treatments to
his conventional cancer therapies; the role both can play for cancer
patients; and the distinction between "healing" and "curing" someone
with cancer.

Lenny Zakim's 45th birthday in November 1998 was one he wasn't sure
he would live to see, because three years earlier he was diagnosed with
multiple myeloma, an incurable malignancy of the bone marrow.

David Eisenberg
is the director of the Center for Alternative Medicine Research and
Education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. Ken Anderson was Lenny Zakim's oncologist. He practices at the Dana
Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and treated Lenny for multiple myeloma
from Lenny's diagnosis in 1995 until his death in 1999.

Michael Lerner is the president and founder of Commonweal, a health
and environmental research institute in Bolinas, CA.

Peter Churchill is a manual therapist who specializes in the treatment
of chronic pain.
