When the collapse of the Soviet trade bloc curtailed Cuba's access to affordable sources of fertilizer and pesticides, Castro pushed Cuba to find ways to boost soil fertility, and control weeds, and pest and disease outbreaks using biofertilizers, intercropping, nonchemical weed controls, and other creative technologies. The result has been one of the largest conversions from conventional high-input intensive agriculture to organic or semi-organic farming in human history. |
