Crocodile Cultural Icons

Thousands of years of fascination and fear, coupled with the determined efforts of crocodile conservationists over the last three decades, have fuelled the way for another invaluable component to the crocodile conservation success story -- tourism. Why watch "Jurassic Park" when you can visit Kakadu National Park and see for yourself the awesome creatures whose ancestors preyed upon the dinosaurs? The Northern Territory now receives millions of visitors each year hoping to catch a glimpse of saltwater crocodiles in the wild. Ask most visitors, and they'll admit this is high on their list of priorities -- many equate the Northern Territory with the crocodile, which is quite an achievement in promotion given the situation less than 30 years ago. There is no doubt today that saltwater crocodiles are integral to the entire region -- its cultural heritage, its society, its economics, its history and its ecosystem. More than ever, that essential contribution is being increasingly recognized, yet the management effort cannot afford to rest. Educating the public about the dangers of crocodiles, yet teaching them respect rather than fear, is a fine balancing act, and is not always successful. However, there have been only seven fatalities in the Northern Territory caused by saltwater crocodiles in the last 28 years, reasonable proof that most people here are aware of the dangers lurking in crocodile country just outside Darwin. Most locals acknowledge that Darwin would not be the same without its resident crocodile population.

Crocodile

I came to Australia fascinated by the potential conflicts between crocodiles and people, yet understanding little about it at the time. The remarkable history of the conservation of saltwater crocodiles out here has taught me much about how conservation works, and how it also can fail to work unless it adapts to changing situations and the demands of not only the wildlife, but also the people who have to live around that wildlife and who are instrumental themselves in its ultimate survival. The story is not over, and will continue to develop as long as there are crocodiles and people out here. I feel elated, though, that the determination of those dedicated to ensuring the survival of the saltwater crocodile has resulted in a situation in which salties are truly viewed as an important and integral part of the land. The saltwater crocodile is pure and visceral magic. Witness it while you can.
