PBS in the Classroom

School's Out, Adventure's In!

  • SHARE:

Summer’s here!  That wonderful time when teachers gather up all their belongings in the classroom and go take a great big three-month nap on their hammocks, right?

Ha-ha, if only!  We know many of you are still working and, if not, are spending the summer hours with friends, family and colleagues, finding new and interesting adventures. That’s perfect timing, since this week we are launching PBS Education’s Summer of Adventure!

Share your Adventures with Us
As an educator, you know better than anyone that adventure is often woven into learning, and learning is most fun when it’s an adventure. Whether embarking on an expedition in your own neighborhood with family, getting lost in a book on your own blissful downtime, or travelling with students to far-away places, we want you to share your learning adventures with us —whether they’re with your family or your class.

Each week, we’ll highlight a different “type” of adventure and we want to hear from you. Have you trekked across the globe? Hunted for bugs in your backyard? Received a standing ovation for a favorite song? Gotten your toes wet in the local swimming hole? Biked a rugged path? Shared a long walk with your loyal pup?

Share your photos and best summer memories each week using #SummerAdventurePBS.

June 23 – 30 | Travel Adventures
Where have your summer travels taken you? From the next town to another continent, share your favorite travel memories with us.

June 20 – July 7 | Neighborhood Adventures
Every community has a lot to explore! Share your favorite summer memories from local libraries, parks, front porches, and the places that make your neighborhood unique.

July 7 – 14 | Reading & Creative Adventures
Movies and plays and musicals, oh my! Some of our best summer adventures can take us far away without ever leaving our seats. Whether you’ve been transported by a great book, theater performance, or piece of art, share your stories with us.

July 14 – 21 | Water Adventures
You don’t need to be near a coast to go on a great water adventure! From streams to sprinklers (and bays to oceans) share your favorite places to cool off during the summer!

July 21 – 28 | Outdoor Adventures
Hiking? Camping? Running? Swimming? Show us how you get outside and play during the summer months.

July 28 – August 4 | Wildlife & Pet Adventures
From bird watching to whale watching, there are lots of ways to (safely) encounter wildlife this summer. Not ready to take a walk on the wild side? Share photos and memories of your pets accompanying you on any of your summer adventures!

Take the Wild Kratts Along for the Ride
You don’t have to do this alone—we’ve got the perfect companion to accompany you and your family on all of your fun adventures: the Wild Kratts! We’ve created a “Flat Kratt” which can go wherever you go. Simply print it out, color it, and let the adventuring begin! Snap photos along the way and share them using #FlatKratt + #SummerAdventurePBS. Learn More.

For those of you who are teaching this summer, working with kids, prepping for the fall or just looking for fun activities to do with your kids, we’ve also curated a fun summer adventure learning collection in PBSLearningMedia. The collection is full of resources for students of all ages and can also be used to kick the “What I did this summer…” essays up a notch when it’s back to school time!

We’ll also continue to publish our Teacher’s Lounge blog throughout the summer, with everything from thought-provoking posts about the environment to tips and hints on teaching empathy.

So, get your adventure on!  Or, lie back in a hammock (you deserve it). Whichever you choose, we hope you’ll share the highlights of your summer with us.
