In the 21st year of his reign, Ramesses II negotiated a treaty with
the Hittites, whom he had narrowly defeated at the battle of Kadesh
sixteen years earlier. The two nations pledged to respect each other's
territories and to defend each other against enemy attack. A copy
of the treaty is still preserved in the most holy of temples at
Karnak.
