Ospedale San Marco
Ospedale San Marco

Europe's first state orphanage, the Ospedale San Marco was founded and paid for by the silk weaver's guild. Built by Filippo Brunelleschi, this was one of the first times true classical columns had been used in their proper context - for structural support - since the Roman age. The Ospedale marked the true beginning of Brunelleschi's remarkable architectural and engineering career.
