Zapatistas

The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is an indigenous, peasant movement that launched an armed rebellion against the Mexican government on January 1, 1994 -- the same day the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect. The Zapatistas warned that the agreement would constitute a death sentence for Mexico's traditional cultures. Members of the rebel army and its civilian support groups are largely from indigenous Mayan communities in Chiapas.
