John Burroughs and Charles
Keeler roamed the tundra, surprised to be plagued by
bumblebees and mosquitoes so close to the Arctic Circle.
Burroughs experienced the common loss of depth perception
caused by the tundra landscape and walked for hours in an
attempt to reach a hill that was, most likely, a good thirty
miles away. Details of Alaskan insects
collected by the Harriman Expedition.
