I turned to see the newest arrival, a helpful young Chinese man who carried a bulging notebook stuffed with hundreds of Vietnamese business cards, every unlettered inch covered in lacy Oriental characters. He was sitting cross-legged on the floor with three Hanoi-bound tourists, earnestly explaining without the use of the letter "r" how to get around the foreign prices and gouging conductors on the buses between Nha Trang and Danang.

"You must wait until one houa befo bus leave. Then find local Veennamese man and ask him buy ticket fo you. You jump on bus two minute befo go. When conducto ask for ticket, you tell him you no pay foleign plices. You fight, it cost only twelve t'ousand Dong, not eighteen." A difference of about sixty cents.

"But," he added with a sad shake of his head. "You take expless bus, they t'low you off. Must take local bus." A difference of about four and a half hours.
